A GT1 race car homologated for the road: 26 road cars, a 6.9-litre V12, and the most expensive new car in the world when it was sold.
4 November 2026
Mercedes-AMG built the CLK GTR to go racing, and then built road cars because the regulations required it. The race car took both the drivers' and the teams' titles in the 1997 FIA GT Championship. The road car exists only because homologation demanded a small production run. That order of events is the entire character of the car, and it is the reverse of how almost every other road-going hypercar came about.
Twenty coupés and six roadsters for the road, so twenty-six road cars. Counts of twenty-eight appear in some sources, which are including the two prototypes.
Underneath is a 6.9-litre naturally aspirated V12 in a carbon-fibre and aluminium honeycomb monocoque that was engineered for a racing car rather than adapted into one.
Around $2.6 million, which made it the most expensive new production car in the world at the time.
Hagerty's October 2026 price guide puts a 1998 coupé in good condition at $8,350,000. Roadsters sit above coupés, on six cars against twenty. An older RM Sotheby's catalogue estimated coupés at £6.4 to £7.3 million and roadsters at £8.4 to £10.5 million; those figures have aged, but the ratio between the two bodystyles has not.
Public sales are rare enough that there is no usable index. With twenty-six cars in existence and most of them in long-term collections, a price guide is an estimate of what one would fetch rather than a record of what they do fetch. Treat any single number you are quoted as a starting position.
At this population every car is known. Owners do not advertise, because advertising a car with twenty-five siblings identifies it immediately. Both the coupé and the roadster are reachable privately; which car, and its specification, is confirmed on enquiry.
This is a car we can currently reach off-market. Specification, provenance and location are released once we understand the requirement.
